The Real Communion Table

Every believer carries a sacred place within them that no man can see and no hand can touch. It is the inner sanctuary—the heart. This is the true communion table of the Lord. It is not made of wood or stone, and it cannot be decorated with candles or silver cups. It is the spiritual table where heaven meets humanity, where the Word of God becomes life within us.

God has never been impressed by outward displays of religion. From the beginning, His desire was not for temples built by human hands but for hearts that could carry His presence. The true altar of communion has always been within the believer. When Jesus said, “The kingdom of God is within you,” (Luke 17:21). He was pointing to this truth—the real table of the Lord is not in buildings but in hearts that receive His Word.

When a believer opens the heart to God’s Word, a divine meal begins. The Spirit takes the truth and serves it to the soul. The eyes of understanding open, faith is stirred, and transformation begins. That is true communion. You do not need a priest, a chalice, or a wafer for it to happen; all you need is a willing heart and the Word of God.

In the old covenant, priests entered the temple to offer sacrifices. But in the new covenant, Christ made the believer the temple. The Holy Spirit dwells within, and the altar is now the heart. This means communion is not something we go to a church to perform—it is something we live in daily. Each moment we meditate on the Word, each time we let truth correct or comfort us, we are partaking of the real Holy Communion at the table within.

When your heart becomes the table of the Lord, everything changes. You no longer wait for special days to feel close to God; you live in constant fellowship with Him. Every day becomes a communion day. Every prayer becomes a shared meal. Every revelation from Scripture becomes a slice of living bread. And every time you obey His Word, you drink deeply from the cup of His Spirit.

The challenge for many believers is that their hearts are too crowded for communion. There is no space for the table because it is filled with worry, bitterness, pride, and distraction. The Lord cannot set His table where the heart is cluttered with other loves. He desires a clean space—a humble and teachable heart. David prayed, “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.” (Psalm 51:10). That is the preparation for true communion.

When you make your heart His dwelling, you begin to experience communion in a living way. You hear His voice in quiet moments. You feel His presence not only in church but also in daily life. His Word becomes personal, speaking directly to your situations. The Bible is no longer a book to read—it becomes bread to eat.

At this inner table, Christ Himself is both the host and the meal. He invites you to come as you are, to sit and feast on His Word. There, you find peace for your mind, healing for your soul, and strength for your journey. And the beauty of this communion is that it never ends. The more you eat, the more you hunger for Him; the more you drink, the more you thirst for truth. This is the holy cycle of divine fellowship—continual feeding, continual transformation.

It is at this table that you will find what outward rituals could never give—intimacy with God. The bread and wine of church ceremonies may remind you of Him, but only the Word and Spirit within you can reveal Him. At the heart’s table, you know Him not through symbols but through experience. You don’t just remember Christ—you live in Him, and He lives in you.

The apostle Paul understood this when he wrote, “Christ in you, the hope of glory.” (Colossians 1:27). Communion was never meant to be Christ outside of you—it was meant to be Christ inside of you. When His Word abides in your heart, He abides there too. That is the mystery of the true communion table.

Sometimes believers say, “I feel far from God.” But the truth is, God is not far; He dwells within. What creates the distance is an untouched heart. When the heart remains closed to His Word, the table remains empty. But the moment you open it, He fills it with living truth.

The real communion table is not a place of performance; it is a place of presence. You don’t need perfect words to sit at it—you just need honesty. You don’t need ritual; you need relationship. You don’t need to impress God; you need to invite Him. Every heart that makes room for His Word becomes a living altar of fellowship.

So before you rush to the church’s table of bread and wine, pause and look inward. Ask yourself: Is my heart prepared for the Lord’s table within? Have I allowed His Word to shape my thoughts, purify my desires, and direct my life? That is where communion truly happens. At the real communion table—the heart—no bread ever goes stale, no wine ever runs dry, and no believer ever leaves hungry. It is a place of endless supply, for its host is the Bread of Life Himself.

If you keep your heart open, the table will always be full. Every morning you rise, God will be there to serve fresh truth. Every night before you sleep, He will remind you of His promises. And through every trial, He will strengthen you with words that give life. This is the real communion table—not in a building, not in a ritual, but within you. Guard it, honor it, and visit it daily. For there, you will meet the Living Word, and there, you will find the fellowship that never ends.
